Glossary

Allies

In the Second World War this meant Britain and its Empire, the Soviet Union (1941), the USA (1941), Poland, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Belgium, the Netherlands, the Free French, Norway, Denmark and China.

These countries fought against Germany, Italy (until the downfall of Mussolini) and Japan.

Bias

One-sided and unbalanced view.

Caption

Short sentence describing a cartoon, picture, photo or painting.

Empire

A group of countries subject to one government and/or monarch.

Evacuate

To move people out of a danger area.

John Bull

A made up person, meant to represent Britain and British characteristics such as strength, honesty, and a belief in fairness. Usually he looks like a 19th century country squire wearing a red coat and boots.

Morale

People's courage, confidence and enthusiasm.

Nazi Germany

Name used to describe Germany between 1933 and 1945 when it was run by Hitler and the National Socialist (Nazi) Party.

Propaganda

One-sided (biased) information which is used to persuade people to support certain ideas or government policies.

Second World War

This war started in September 1939 and continued until August 1945. Most countries in the world were involved.

Swastika

A symbol used by Nazi Germany during 1933 -1945 to represent their country. It was used on German flags of this period.

Symbols

Pictures, objects and images that are used to represent countries, people, events and qualities.

Union Jack
