  JUST 1/695; an entry from the 1241 Eyre Roll. If you took refuge in a church when you were on the run for having committed a crime, you could claim sanctuary. You were then under the protection of the Church. If you confessed your crime, you could then "abjure" (leave) the country. Any possessions you left behind were taken by the king.
