  SP 36/19, Part I, f.54-57. An account from 1730 by one of the King's messengers, Nathan Carrington, of being robbed at night on the highway.
(There was no postal service, so the government used special King's Messengers, like Nathan Carrington. His "escutcheon" is his royal badge.)
