Under the Prevention of Crime Acts
of 1871 and 1879, convicts about to be released from prison were photographed
(Source 4a shows three such photographs from 1882). On release they
were made to report regularly to the police. This document is from
a report on the system prepared in 1886.
In these documents, look for ways in which the new
police were finding their way, dealing with crime and the public.
