  Sessions of the Peace in Lincoln, 1381-1396, KB 9/261, Roll K item 101. In this case from Lincolnshire in 1392, Germanus Clerk was involved in two types of medieval punishment: he was put in the stocks and in gaol, but then he escaped and sought sanctuary in a church. He could have been hanged, given the value of the chalice he stole, so was probably glad to be able to claim "benefit of clergy". The scribe of this case obviously has a low opinion of him.
