  CO 201/441 85620 petition of the colonists of New South Wales. By the mid-19th century the people of Australia were objecting strongly to their country being used as a dumping-ground for unwanted British criminals. They had been assured in 1840 that New South Wales would no longer be used as a transportation destination. Then, in 1847, the British government discussed renewing the system, provoking protests like this one.
