As you study the source, ask yourself:

  • Why are the two threatening letters signed ‘Swing’?
  • Swing letters were often sent to farmers demanding they increase wages for farm workers or else their barn would be burned. Why might someone send Swing letters to this university college?
  • Why would a college be the target of protesters in 1830?
  • What is Dr Lamb’s reaction?
